RSS - Really Simple Syndication

What is an RSS feed?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary.  RSS feeds allow a publisher to syndicate or share online content automatically. It is an easy way for subscribers to receive automatic updates from a website without having to visit the websites and searching for new or updated content.

RSS
The EPDA websites offers a number of RSS feeds including recently published research papers, global events calendar and international news and press releases (incl. research developments).

How do I start using RSS feeds?

You can view an RSS feed through most modern Internet browers such as Internet Explorer, Safari and Mozilla Firefox.  These have built in news readers (sometimes called Aggregators) that can interpret the feeds.  Some browsers, including Firefox, Opera and Safari, automatically check for feeds for you when you visit a website, and display an icon when they find one. This can make subscribing to feeds much easier. For more details on these, please check their websites.

If your Internet browser cannot view these feeds, you can install a third party news reader.  There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and others that are downloadable applications. Different news readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that will work with your computer.  Some popular news readers include:

Browser-based news readers let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable applications let you store them on your main computer in the same way that you either download your e-mail using Outlook, or keep it on a web-based service like Hotmail.

Once you have a News Reader, all you have to do is subscribe to the RSS content. This will then display the latest headlines and content from your chosen websites.

In general, if you click on the RSS button you can subscribe to the feed in various ways.  This may be by dragging the URL of the feed into your news reader or by cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your news reader. Most sites that offer feeds will show the RSS logo or a similar button, but some may just have a normal web link.
