2023: Taking action to prevent the renewal of glyphosate

Ahead of a vote in the European Parliament to renew the controversial pesticide glyphosate – which many experts believe could be a cause of health problems including Parkinson’s and cancer – we ran an advocacy campaign urging EU Member States to vote NO to the renewal.

While, disappointingly, the renewal vote still passed, we were inspired by the strong support we received from our community, and will continue to raise awareness about the harmful effects of pesticides.

2023: Parkinson’s Passport

Inspired by the global Parkinson’s community travelling to Barcelona for the World Parkinson Congress, we re-released our Parkinson’s Passport, a downloadable booklet to take with you when you’re going away from home or travelling abroad.

Created in collaboration with healthcare professionals, our member organisations, and our industry partners, the Parkinson’s Passport provides essential medical information and helps others understand what people with Parkinson’s may need outside their own environment – in airports, hotels and other public places.

2023: “Connect with us” campaign at World Parkinson Congress

We were delighted to join the thousands of people who attended the World Parkinson Congress in Barcelona during July 2023. Highlights of our time at the Congress included:

  • Hosting a joyous social event which saw our friends and colleagues united in one room for the first time since the pandemic
  • Presenting several posters, including our Parkinson’s Manifesto for Europe
  • Receiving a video message from none other than Sir Paul McCartney at the opening ceremony

We also enjoyed talking to many Congress attendees from across Europe – from people with Parkinson’s to healthcare professionals, charity representatives and treatment industry figures – at our Connect With Us map, where they could add their name and organisation to show just how much of the European Parkinson’s community was represented.

2022-2023: Parkinson’s creativity project

A remarkable discovery, well known within the Parkinson’s community and quite unknown to many others, is a potential link between Parkinson’s and the unlocking of tremendous creative potential. Our Parkinson’s creativity project explored this phenomenon.

This included a two-day Innovation Lab workshop at Market Hall in Plymouth, UK in July 2022, which brought together artists living with Parkinson’s, neurologists, geriatricians and more to experiment with immersive experiences and explore how to raise awareness of and encourage this ‘creative burst’ experienced by people with Parkinson’s.

2018: The Parky Challenge

Our Europe-wide fundraising drive challenged participants to sign up to a fundraising event of their choice – from a marathon to a sponsored silence or coffee morning – and then register their event on our website, and donate any money raised to Parkinson’s Europe. Our generous supporters helped to raise thousands of Euros for Parkinson’s Europe.

2017-2018: #UniteForParkinsons

#UniteForParkinsons was a global Parkinson’s campaign by Parkinson’s Europe and Parkinson’s UK to raise unprecedented awareness of Parkinson’s around the world and to grow an active global Parkinson’s community.

It took place on World Parkinson’s Day 2017 and 2018, and saw global Parkinson’s organisations use the hashtag #UniteForParkinsons and share stories from people living with the condition, including the powerful film above.

In 2018, the hashtag was used 26,000 times across the world and the campaign created almost 1 million social media engagements.

2014-2017: My PD Journey

We led this European coalition which worked towards improving the lives of people living with Parkinson’s disease. Working alongside people with Parkinson’s, carers, patient organisations, neurologists, doctors and other members of the Parkinson’s community, we carried out various projects, such as:

  • The European Inventory, a research project designed to identify gaps in Parkinson’s care and seek out national examples of good practice that could be adopted in other regions.
  • The Parkinson’s Disease Composite Scale, a rating scale for doctors and neurologists to use to measure the severity of symptoms experienced by people with Parkinson’s
