EUROPAR has been created to research the ‘hidden’, non-motor (movement) aspects of Parkinson’s disease. The committee aims to represent the interests of people with Parkinson’s (PWP) throughout Europe and has set up a research centre at King’s College Hospital in south London, United Kingdom.
Whilst pockets of expertise in this area exist, this is the first time all the non-movement aspects of Parkinson’s (including diagnosis, symptoms and treatment) will be studied and investigated under one roof increasing understanding of this key unmet need and ultimately help improve treatments for PWPs.
The research centre will work closely with patient groups such as Parkinson’s UK and EPDA, as well as the World Federation of Neurology (section on Parkinson’s disease) and with other leading Parkinson’s research centres in Germany, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway,
the Netherlands, Slovenia, Portugal and Greece, focusing on:
-
pursuing translational ”bench to bedside”
research, i.e. looking at the impact of “real life” treatments such as conventional
oral therapy, but also skin patches, injections or infusions on non-movement
aspect of Parkinson’s
- developing better patient and public involvement in the treatment of Parkinson’s, so PWP can become experts in their condition and learn from each other.
EUROPAR
is funded by a grant from the Parkinson’s Disease Non Motor Group (P.D.N.M.G.)
as well as by educational grant committees from several commercial companies.
