Validation of the non-motor symptoms questionnaire (NMS-Quest)
Overall, this questionnaire can be a useful clinical tool for screening non-motor problems in an office setting.

Mood disorders in Parkinson's disease
The development and validation of diagnostic criteria and rating scales for these disorders remain a priority particularly in relation to anxiety and apathy. Another gap in the management of these disorders is the limited empirical evidence for the treatment of these problems.

Assessing the utility of Freezing of Gait Questionnaires in Parkinson's Disease
This study demonstrate a potential role for sAPPα and sAPPβ in distinguishing between PS, a finding that needs to be confirmed in future studies of larger cohorts. There is a tendency towards low levels of Aβ(1-42) in DLB patients in this cohort.

Quadriceps Muscle Weakness, Activation Deficits, and Fatigue With Parkinson Disease
These findings provide additional evidence for lower-extremity strength loss with PD; central activation deficits may account for some of the strength deficits, especially with increased PD motor signs.

Phosphorylated α-synuclein can be detected in blood plasma and is potentially a useful biomarker for Parkinson's disease
Thus, phosphorylated α-syn can be detected in blood plasma and shows more promise as a diagnostic marker than the nonphosphorylated protein. Longitudinal studies undertaken over a more extended time period will be required to determine whether α-syn can act as a marker of disease progression.

Primary dystonia and dystonia-plus syndromes: clinical characteristics, diagnosis, and pathogenesis
In recent years, there have been substantial advances in the understanding of the spectrum of clinical features that encompass dystonia syndromes, from severe generalised childhood dystonia that is often genetic in origin, to adult-onset focal dystonias and rarer forms of secondary dystonias, to dystonia as a feature of other types of CNS dysfunction.

Body mass index in Parkinson's disease: A meta-analysis
PD patients had a significantly lower BMI than controls (overall effect 1.73, 95% CI 1.112.35, P<0.001). Pooled data of seven studies showed that patients with Hoehn and Yahr stage 3 had a lower BMI than patients with stage 2 (3.9, 95% CI 0.17.7, P<0.05). Disease duration was not associated with BMI.

Real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging neurofeedback for treatment of Parkinson's disease
These findings demonstrate that self-modulation of cortico-subcortical motor circuits can be achieved by PD patients through neurofeedback and may result in clinical benefits that are not attainable by motor imagery alone.
09 November 2011
Parkinson disease: The enteric nervous system spills its guts
This article discusses current evidence which indicates that the presence of ENS pathology may by exploited to improve our understanding and management of PD and likely other neurodegenerative disorders.
08 November 2011
Contribution of routine brain MRI to the differential diagnosis of parkinsonism: a 3-year prospective follow-up study
This study evaluates what routine brain MRI contributes to the clinical diagnosis, in both early and advanced disease stages.
