“Yes, I may have Parkinson’s but Parkinson’s will not have me!” a message reinforced throughout World PD Day celebrations in Mumbai, India

11 April, globally commemorated as Parkinson’s day, is celebrated each year by The Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorder Society (PDMDS), with people with Parkinson’s, their caregivers and the medical fraternity. It reflects the diverse group involved in Parkinson’s everyday and is an occasion for them to come together and share their experiences of working towards improving quality of life.

This year, the celebrations were held at the S.P.Jain, Auditorium, Bombay Hospital, Mumbai with Dr.B.S.Singhal founder member of the PDMDS welcoming the gathering and thanking the guests of honor Ms Priya Dutt (Member of Parliament), Ms Ritika Sahani (Singer and Disability activist) and Dr.P.C.Shastri (eminent psychiatrist). The traditional lighting of the lamp and a warm welcome song by members of the Borivili Support Group followed with Ms. Dutt signing the Global Declaration and pledging her allegiance to the global movement towards improving the life of those with Parkinson’s.

Dr. S.M.Katrak evoked a sense of hope and drive to meet each challenge of Parkinson’s every step of the way in his message and Dr. Barretto (coordinator-PDMDS) briefly presented the work and services of the PDMDS. Support group activities were particularly appreciated while future ventures of reaching out to people with advanced and early onset Parkinson’s provided yet another ray of hope.

Ms. Dutt, remembering her father, the late Mr. Sunil Dutt and his gallant struggle to recover from a stroke, spoke of faith, hope, love and support as being the chief factors behind his recovery. She highlighted the inspiration she felt by the ‘hope’ she experienced amongst people with Parkinson’s and caregiver’s and expressed a desire to be associated with the cause and participate in its activities in whatever manner possible.

“Stepping Up, A guide for persons with Parkinson’s” an information book developed by the PDMDS especially for the occasion was presented by Dr. Katrak and Ms. Dutt.

A skit, written by Ms. Ila Mehta and essayed by people with Parkinson’s and caregivers from the Borivili and South Mumbai support groups, began a program that displayed a fine balance between creating awareness, disseminating information and entertainment. . The underlying message of the skit beautifully conveyed “Yes, I may have Parkinson’s but Parkinson’s will not have me!” and reflected the solidarity and spirit that people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers display when coping every day, without relenting or letting it bog them down.

Dr. Shastri spoke about depression in Parkinson’s a topic received with great interest as evidenced by the audiences’ feedback and interaction. Ms. Ritika Sahni, who enthralled the audiences with songs, was visibly moved and stimulated the crowd to have faith, to gain strength from each other and whole-heartedly participate in life.

Dr. Rajvi Mehta, from the Iyengar Yogashray presented on the importance of the application of yoga in Parkinson’s emphasizing how it has helped innumerable people and how it continues to improve everyday functioning.

Dr. B. S. Singhal moderated a question and answer session involving a panel of Drs C. Sankla, N. Surya, P. Shastri, P. Doshi and J. Lalkaka on different aspects of PD ranging from treatment options to depression to eating habits. The interaction helped the audience understand the condition better, while the panel gained a better insight into the difficulties experienced by the patient group.

These group interactions reiterated the underlying thread between all the days’ presentations and performances - that of unrelenting strength, hope, faith and solidarity in coping with Parkinson’s and the PDMDS continues its endeavors in this direction.

World PD Day LithuaniaHappiness is Magic, says Rasma Zlatkuviene from Lithuania

“Parkinson’s can slow our movements, deprive us of our voice, cripple our body, however it cannot cripple love, shatter hope, silence courage or suppress friendship. Where are these treasures hidden and who can find them? “

These feelings will be shared by the Lithuanian PD society members when they gather together to mark World PD Day. Traditionally, the Red Tulip travels all over Lithuania, being passed from one PD support group to another and this year the Red Tulip will be hosted by the Kaisiadorys PD support group where a conference is being held on 12 April.

The conference theme, prompted by the EPDA 2007 conference in Stresa, Italy will include presentations by doctors and neurologists, on PD and non motor symptoms followed by entertainment from the Stasys dance group.

Stasy represented the Lithuanian PDS at the 2006 World PD Congress in USA and he visits every support group providing a special program on dance therapy. A website www.parkinsonas.lt will also be launched to mark the occasion.

“Happiness is a magic power to return to those who spread it. Spreading and sharing joy and happiness is one thing among many others that people can and will experience when they get together on special occasions.”

When Parkinson’s hits yearly in life

Parkinson Luxembourg (PL) a.s.b.l listened to their members and dedicated this year’s World PD Day celebrations “When Parkinson’s hits yearly in life” to those who receive the diagnosis of Parkinson’s before they are 50 years.

Sylvie Mersch, Parkinson Luxembourg committee member, diagnosed when she was 45 led a round table discussion presenting results of a survey carried out amongst the association’s members in 2006. The aim of the survey (a questionnaire was sent to 144 members with 51 replies reporting 11 had been diagnosed under the age of 50, the youngest being 29) was to gather people’s testimonies about their experiences of living with Parkinson.

Invited French speakers Jean-Pierre Lucas diagnosed at 43 and his wife Françoise spoke about their experiences, providing a lively, realistic and positive account of life with Parkinson’s that led to enthusiastic debate during the meeting and dinner.

This event received active support from the local media and the Association hopes that this coverage will encourage those who need help and support to contact the association.

SwedenSweden

ParkinsonFörbundetRehabilitation and more rehabilitation say the Swedish Parkinson’s Disease Association (SPA)

A survey completed by over 2,300 people with PD, highlights the possibilities of Parkinson rehabilitation but also the need to access to it no matter where people live in Sweden, which sadly is not the case. Thanks to the people who completed the survey, SPA and its branches are in a better position to lobby for change throughout 2008.

It is the power of people's voices that can facilitate much needed change and raise awareness of this important issue. At the same time, SPA will be launching Rehabilitation Guidelines for Parkinson’s, both for healthcare professionals and people with PD.

Alongside the launching of the Rehabilitation Guidelines, a Nordic meeting for doctors focussing on advanced Parkinson’s with motor fluctuations will be held in April. Topics presented will include how to optimize treatment, non motor-cognitive complications, how to organize a PD-team, different targets for DBS and how to choose therapy.

Organising seminars, meetings, inviting politicians, decision makers and media from all over the country, means that the Parkinson community are manifesting a strong presence in the society!
