April 11th - World Parkinson's Disease Day
The first World Parkinson's Disease Day was held in April 1997, and commemorated the birthday of Dr James Parkinson.
The occasion marked the launch of EPDA Charter. This was the first of
successive annual World PD Day celebrations the aims of which is to
raise the profile and enhance the public's awareness of Parkinson's
Disease.
With
the support of the World Health Organisation who co-sponsored World
Parkinson's Day, the EPDA Charter for People with Parkinson's Disease
provided the central focus and opportunity for people with Parkinson's,
their families, and healthcare professionals to work together to
promote awareness and increase the profile of Parkinson's.
The charter states:
People with Parkinson's Disease have the right to:
-
Be referred to a doctor with a special interest in Parkinson's disease
-
Receive an accurate diagnosis
-
Have access to support services
-

-
Take part in managing the illness
Declared this 11th Day of April 1997.
The
EPDA takes this opportunity of wishing great success to all the people
and organisations that are preparing events to celebrate World
Parkinson's Disease Day and thank you for your continued efforts to
raise the profile and enhance public awareness.
